Student Work Placement

In March 2012 ERA provided University of Manchester graduate student Elizabeth Murphy a work placement opportunity to gain experience in the field of environmental planning and GIS. Lizzie is completing a Masters in Geographical Information Science and is spending three weeks at ERA. Her task is to build a GIS database from environmental records supplied by Antarctica New Zealand, and then produce maps showing the distirbution of incidents and installations in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Victoria Land. A second project is using GIS to map usage levels in the Dry Valleys based on data from helicopter operations schedules, with the objective of highlighting pressures related to human activities being conducted in the area. A training exercise in geodetic GPS surveying will also be carried out in nearby Hayley Wood, an ancient woodland famous for its spring display of bluebells!
